For the Adelaide Test, Australia has named Steve Smith as the opener.
In place of David Warner at the top of the order, Australia’s selectors have chosen Steve Smith rather than a specialised opener.
The 13-member team, which includes all-rounder Cameron Green at No. 4 in the starting lineup, was revealed by selectors on Wednesday for the two-Test series against the West Indies. The first Test is scheduled to start at Adelaide Oval on January 17. 2024
Additionally, Matt Renshaw and Scott Boland have been added to the team; however, they will probably be used as backup bowlers and batsmen and will arrive late in the game.

Go over this further, Chief selector George Bailey commented, “That’s great that Cameron Green is moving up to the No. 4 spot and Steve Smith will be opening the batting.
“We feel that the six batters on our team are the best in the nation,” the manager said.
Selectors decided against starting with a specialist because they wanted to choose from among the top six batsmen and bring all-rounder Green back into the lineup.
It was anticipated that Renshaw, Marcus Harris, and Cameron Bancroft would compete for Warner’s job when he announced his retirement plans back in June.
Since then, Bancroft has amassed the highest run total in the Sheffield Shield, supporting Western Australia’s historic season from the previous summer, during which he also topped the charts.
But in addition to offering Mitch Marsh and the three quicks a legitimate fifth fast-bowling option, Australia’s selectors saw a generational talent in Green.
Bailey said of Green, “We feel like we have someone who we think is pretty talented, who potentially was going to find it hard to get any Test cricket in the next 12 months, the way the rest of that batting order is functioning.
It is unlikely to be especially advantageous for Greeny. He can play, and we can profit greatly from it. We’ve been working through some of the possible answers for that, as well as how and where he might fit in.
“Steve is eager to [open] and is motivated and energised.” Asked if Smith would move back down the order if he didn’t work out as an opener, Bailey said that had “been part of the discussions with Steve”
He remarked, “I think he’s eager for this to be a big chapter in his career.”
Our eyes are not fixed too far ahead. [But] Steve wants to stay here for all intents and purposes.
“It is incredibly selfless of someone who has achieved such success in one or more middle-order positions to be willing to try their hand at something new and different.”
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, had issued a warning against shifting Smith up to the opener position so that Green could bat at number four because he thought the order would be too much disrupted.
However, officials have finally determined that is the best course of action because they think it will inspire Smith and possibly prolong his career in Test cricket.
Green’s comeback follows his expulsion from the team in the Ashes the previous year after Marsh, standing in for him at Headingley, amassed a century.
The sole alteration to the starting XI that defeated Pakistan 3-0 to begin the Test summer is his arrival to the team.
